Judicial decisions require not only factual analysis but also empathy, moral reasoning, and the ability to interpret context—areas where machines still fall short.&nbsp;According to Sergey Pen, Deputy Chairman for Science, Innovation, and Artificial Intelligence at Maqsut Narikbayev University, current AI systems are not capable of replacing judges. “Language models generate answers based on statistical patterns and existing data, but they cannot reproduce the legal chain of reasoning,” he explained. “This is a fundamental limitation.” Pen stressed that while AI can assist with research and data analysis, it cannot provide the justification required for judicial decisions—a cornerstone of any legal system. “Only a human judge can legitimise and deliver a judicial ruling,” he added.&nbsp;In countries like Kazakhstan, AI is already being used to support the judiciary. Systems can analyze legislation, review case histories, and identify patterns across similar disputes, helping judges maintain consistency and efficiency. However, these tools are reported to remain supplementary, where the final decisions—and their legal legitimacy—rest solely with human judges. A similar approach is seen in China, where AI has been introduced in courtrooms for basic administrative tasks. According to law student Hongyi Chen from the China University of Political Science and Law, AI can assist in finding relevant cases or filling in procedural gaps, but it does not determine verdicts.&nbsp;Research presented by students from Georgia highlighted a key challenge: the gap between what technology can do and what the law permits. While AI may be technically capable of handling certain legal tasks, it lacks the ethical judgment required for fair decision-making.At the heart of the debate lies a fundamental concern—the absence of human conscience in machines. Despite the enduring stereotype, today’s Islamic financial ecosystem is increasingly defined by digital innovation, with fintech firms, regulators, and institutions deploying blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced analytics to modernize products rooted in Shariah principles.&nbsp;&nbsp;With an estimated two billion Muslims worldwide, demand for Shariah-compliant financial services is accelerating. Industry data from Dinar Standard values Islamic finance assets at approximately $4.93 trillion, while Islamic fintech is projected to grow from $179 billion by 2026 to $306 billion by 2028. This expansion is being driven by early-stage fintech companies developing digital-first solutions tailored to Islamic financial requirements, including asset-backed lending, profit-and-loss sharing models, and ethical investment structures.&nbsp;A wave of emerging technologies is reshaping the industry’s infrastructure. Blockchain is being used to create transparent, immutable financial records, while AI and big data systems are improving risk assessment, compliance automation, and customer personalization.&nbsp;These tools are particularly relevant to Islamic finance, where transparency and asset-backing are core principles. Traditional Shariah compliance processes, which can take days or weeks when performed manually, are increasingly being automated through digital systems—reducing costs and improving efficiency. However, experts caution that automation introduces new risks, including algorithmic bias, smart contract vulnerabilities, and cybersecurity threats, reinforcing the continued need for human oversight and governance frameworks.&nbsp;A key example is the modernization of sukuk—Islamic financial certificates often compared to bonds. For example, Malaysian startup Finterra initially faced challenges gaining approval due to limited regulator familiarity with blockchain-based Islamic social finance models.&nbsp;&nbsp;While countries including Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey are actively supporting fintech innovation, the absence of unified global standards remains a major constraint on cross-border scalability.&nbsp;Industry observers argue that coordinated international frameworks—particularly around AI governance and Shariah compliance standards—will be critical if Islamic fintech is to realize its full global potential. The University of Münster will become the first higher education institution in Germany to establish a Faculty of Islamic Theology, starting 1 July 2026. This marks a significant milestone for Islamic studies for Germany, aiming to increase both the visibility of the discipline and public tolerance toward Islamic scholarship. Professor Johannes Wessels, the Rector, highlighted the faculty as a symbol of recognition and inclusivity, while Professor Mouhanad Khorchide, the founding dean and former managing director of the Centre for Islamic Theology (CIT), emphasized its role in strengthening the university’s profile as a center of theological diversity and that “this step is an impressive signal of recognition for many Muslims in Germany”. &nbsp;The new faculty will replace the CIT, which has operated as a research center since 2012, and will integrate its activities into a fully independent academic entity. The decision followed years of planning, involving consultations with the NRW State Ministry for Culture and Science, the university’s Senate, student bodies, and the Confessional Advisory Board for Islamic Theology. Operations at the faculty will commence in the winter semester of 2026/27, with eight professors (equally split by gender) teaching courses in areas such as Islamic philosophy and social work, serving approximately 450 enrolled students. &nbsp;As a full-fledged faculty, it will enjoy greater academic and administrative autonomy, including developing its curriculum, conducting research independently, awarding doctoral degrees, and participating in faculty appointments. At the same time, the faculty must meet obligations such as program accreditation, student support, compliance with university statutes, and adherence to broader regulations like equal opportunity and data protection laws. The first faculty council will be elected in summer 2027 to guide governance and the founding dean’s term. &nbsp;The Faculty of Islamic Theology will join Münster’s “Campus of Theology and Religious Studies” alongside Protestant and Catholic theological faculties, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across science, politics, religion, media, and culture.
