The International Journal of Islamic Architecture (IJIA) is inviting submissions on urban design and planning, as well as historical architecture across the Islamic world—encompassing the Middle East, parts of Africa and Asia, and emerging geographies of Islam.Published biennially, the International Journal of Islamic Architecture focuses on rigorous analyses of the practical, historical, and theoretical dimensions of architecture in the Islamic world. The journal seeks to elevate scholarly dialogue and foster informed debate among specialists and researchers in the field.While architecture remains its central focus, IJIA also welcomes interdisciplinary studies that approach architecture through related fields such as art history, archaeology, anthropology, cultural studies, spirituality, religion, and economics. The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution emphasized the importance of contemporary fiqh and its continued development during a meeting with preachers and seminary (hawza) scholars from across the country on July 12, 2023.In his remarks, he stated:“By the grace of God, in Qom the respected officials have initiated a new fiqhi movement. They are researching contemporary fiqh, examining current issues from a fiqhi perspective. This is highly valuable and must certainly continue.”Highlighting the broader implications of this scholarly effort, he added:“In the same way, we must train preachers—preachers who can be truly effective, who can be present everywhere, and who, in terms of numbers, are sufficient to meet the need.”The remarks underscore the strategic linkage between advancing contemporary fiqh (fiqh addressing present-day issues through ijtihadi scholarship) and cultivating capable religious communicators who can effectively convey its insights within society.&nbsp;

A comprehensive report outlining the transformative programs of the Department for Contemporary Jurisprudence (Fiqh) (DCF) of the Hawza seminaries, accompanied by 45 volumes of the department’s scholarly works, was presented during a meeting between Alireza Arafi, Director of the Hawza seminaries, and the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution.&nbsp;Following several days of review, the Supreme Leader inscribed a handwritten note in the margin of the report:&nbsp;“In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful The activities are worthy of commendation. Appreciation should be conveyed.”The letter containing this endorsement was formally sent to the Director of the Hawza seminaries by Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Mohammadi Golpayegani, as reflected in the accompanying document. <img src="https://fiqhci.s3.ir-thr-at1.arvanstorage.com/photo_2023_06_01_08_23_36_6dd8a8de4b_e2e009d648.jpg">After the presentation of the report and the Supreme Leader’s remarks, several additional new titles were unveiled. In total, the works presented can be categorized as follows:<ul><li>20 Persian volumes of advanced ijtihadi research (ijtihad-based scholarship)</li><li>20 Arabic volumes of advanced ijtihadi research</li><li>1 English volume of advanced ijtihadi research</li><li>9 specialized academic volumes</li></ul>Altogether, the collection now comprises 50 volumes of contemporary fiqh scholarship.God willing, a formal public unveiling of all newly produced works of contemporary fiqh will be held in the near future, and the books will be made available to interested scholars and readers.

During a meeting attended by Alireza Arafi and Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Hossein Etnasheri, Director of the Department of Contemporary Fiqh (DCF), the newly published books and academic works of the department were officially presented.Since its establishment, the DCF has sought to play a distinctive role in advancing scholarly discourse within both the Hawza (Islamic seminary) and university spheres by publishing rigorous and specialized works. In line with this mission, the department released more than 45 specialized titles across various fields over the past year alone.The preliminary editions of these works have been presented to Ayatollah Arafi, while the public editions authored by the department’s scholars and researchers are currently in the printing phase. The department expressed hope that these new publications will soon be made available to interested readers and researchers.Hujjat al-Islam Etnasheri noted that the institution’s scholars are striving to enhance both the academic depth and the outreach value of its publications, with particular attention to addressing contemporary issues. <img src="https://fiqhci.s3.ir-thr-at1.arvanstorage.com/photo_2023_05_25_13_25_37_b1a89b38bf_0b75ab501c.jpg">He also clarified details regarding the books displayed during the unveiling ceremony: “The books shown with their spines facing the audience are previous contemporary fiqh publications that were unveiled in Azar 1400 (November–December 2021) and made available to scholars and researchers. The volumes currently being presented to Ayatollah Arafi represent the most recent outputs of the DCF, reflecting our ongoing efforts to publish works addressing up-to-date fiqhi themes”.In the meeting, Hujjat al-Islam Hossein Etnasheri was seen presenting and enumerating the department’s published works in the presence of Ayatollah Arafi.The newly produced preliminary volumes—representing the latest contributions in contemporary fiqh—reportedly drew visible satisfaction from Ayatollah Arafi, Director of Iran’s Hawza seminaries. In response to the scale of the output, he remarked in astonishment that if the reported achievements were accurate, the institution could hardly be described as a mere office; rather, it functions as a full-fledged research institute.These publications were presented last week to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution—may his authority endure—as one of the recent scholarly achievements of the Hawza.
