International Conference on Moral Cognition

Among the distinguished speakers is Joshua Greene, professor at Harvard University and a leading global figure in moral cognition. His book Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them has been translated into Persian and is widely recognized internationally.

Over the past decade, alongside advances in cognitive science and neuroscience, an interdisciplinary field—moral cognition—has emerged at the intersection of moral philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science. Leading research centers at institutions such as Harvard University, Princeton University, and University of Toronto are actively engaged in this domain.

The field examines how individuals make moral decisions:

• Under what conditions do people act based on duty (deontological ethics)? 
• When do cost–benefit calculations—maximizing happiness and minimizing harm—take precedence? 
• How do individuals prioritize personal, group, national, or human interests? 
• Do cultural differences influence moral decision-making? 

These questions are crucial for those concerned with ethical life in society, as moral norms must ultimately be applicable in real-world contexts. Even the teaching of ethical living may evolve in light of such findings.

With the support of the Cognitive Science and Technologies Development Headquarters, a research group has been established at Sharif University of Technology to advance studies in this field. This conference is organized to strengthen international academic engagement with leading scholars in this rapidly growing discipline.
