ICIHES 2023 to Spotlight Global Halal Economy

The First International Conference on Islamic and Halal Economics Studies (ICIHES) is set to take place in Malaysia

The First International Conference on Islamic and Halal Economics Studies (ICIHES) is set to take place in Malaysia, bringing together scholars and industry stakeholders to examine developments in the global halal economy.

Halal Economy

The global halal industry is currently valued at approximately $1 trillion, with businesses worldwide eager to tap into this lucrative market. In recent decades, religious demand has positioned the halal economy as a distinct segment within the global supply chain. Notably, non-Muslim consumers are also increasingly opting for halal products due to considerations such as hygiene, quality, and safety.

In 2021 alone, nearly $2 trillion was spent by 1.9 billion Muslims across sectors including pharmaceuticals, food, fashion, cosmetics, travel, media, and entertainment—driven by ethical consumption patterns inspired by Islamic values.

Malaysia’s halal economy constitutes a significant share of its GDP; however, it continues to face challenges in developing high value-added products and services that could enhance its competitiveness. This conference aims to provide a platform for practitioners, researchers, academics, postgraduate students, NGOs, and other stakeholders from around the world to engage in intellectual discourse on the halal economy. Participants will explore new ideas and present the latest research findings on halal-related issues at both local and international levels, particularly in relation to ongoing developments in Muslim societies.
