New York - The Muslim World League (MWL) launched “AI for Everyone: Faith, Human Dignity and Artificial Intelligence” in New York, with the support and participation of the United Nations, during the High-level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.&nbsp;The event was attended by Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the MWL and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars; Mr. Miguel Moratinos, Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations; &nbsp;Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation; Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development; a large number of religious leaders interested in research on AI ethics; representatives of major AI companies in the United States and the World Bank; representatives of leading American universities; and prominent candidates for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Among its main themes, the event focused on the importance of diverse international participation in addressing AI ethics, including the religious and civilizational dimensions and their shared ethical foundations. These represent an important area of research on AI ethics, entrusted internationally, in this specific context, to the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). This initially includes content that supports or incites hatred, violence and clashes between civilizations for ideological reasons, particularly religious and related intellectual motives. The conference recommended tasking UNAOC with developing an “Alliance of Civilizations Code of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence” and forming a committee for this purpose under its leadership. The committee would bring together a diverse range of religious leaders, experts in intellectual, educational and legislative matters, and representatives of technology companies to reach a UN-based consensus reflecting an alliance of civilizations on this issue.&nbsp;Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, announced the MWL’s intention to launch an AI laboratory in cooperation with technology companies to develop programs benefiting religious, educational and humanitarian institutions connected with religious affairs. He also announced that work would be undertaken on the automation of a number of Islamic and Arabic sources and books to make them available to AI companies, with due regard for intellectual property rights.&nbsp;He further announced the establishment of a dedicated unit to monitor and correct translation errors and to share its findings with everyone. He noted that numerous errors had been identified in translations of Islamic texts and related Islamic sciences, giving rise to meanings that bear no relation to the truth and resulting in profoundly mistaken perceptions and convictions.
