A scientific study calling for support of a project to develop an application utilizing artificial intelligence in the issuance of fatwas has been approved by Qassim University and several other academic institutions and research bodies.
The approved proposal envisions compiling fiqhi chapters—from the Book of Purification (Kitāb al-Ṭahārah) through the full range of legal chapters—into a comprehensive digital encyclopedia powered by AI technologies.
The research, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Its Impact on the Fatwa Industry,” was conducted by Dr. Omar bin Ibrahim Al-Muhaimid, Associate Professor in the Department of Fiqh at the College of Shariah and Islamic Studies, Qassim University. The study further noted that similar AI-based initiatives could be expanded to other Islamic disciplines. It suggested submitting the proposal to the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) to explore potential collaboration in developing such applications.
The study emphasized the possibility of partnering with private-sector entities and proposed offering the application free of charge to users in order to reduce financial barriers. It also recommended translating the platform into the most widely spoken Muslim languages—as well as other global languages—to ensure accessibility for Muslims worldwide.
